What is a SAD lamp?
SAD lamps simulate sunlight, which helps trigger the brain to release serotonin, often called the feel-good hormone. Studies show that using light therapy during periods when daylight hours are short can help adjust your circadian rhythm, the body's process for regulating your sleep-wake cycle.
What is SAD?
Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of low mood that's related to changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same time every year. If you're like most people with SAD, your symptoms start in the autumn and continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody.
Do SAD lamps give you vitamin D? It is thought that SAD lamps give your body vitamin D, however it's the broad-spectrum light emitted from SAD lamps that helps the skin to produce vitamin D. A lack of vitamin D is thought to play a role in SAD.
SAD lamp therapy
Does light therapy help uneasiness? The right light in the morning can reduce uneasiness responses in healthy people, new study shows. The lack of daylight exposure in the winter disrupts our circadian rhythm and reinforces our responses to stressful and uneasiness-provoking experiences. Now it appears that bright light intervention at home can help.
