Muscle & Recovery

178 products covering magnesium, protein, electrolytes, vitamin D, tart cherry and topical products, in capsules, tablets, powders, sachets, liquids, sprays and bath flakes. Brands include Viridian, Mag365, Humantra, REPOWR, BetterYou, Hunter and Gather and New Leaf.

Which nutrients have approved claims?

Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, to normal protein synthesis, to electrolyte balance and to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Protein contributes to a growth in and the maintenance of muscle mass. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function. Calcium and potassium also contribute to normal muscle function.

Protein timing, honestly

Total daily protein matters considerably more than the half-hour after training. If you are hitting your daily target from food, a shake afterwards adds convenience rather than an effect. If you are not, it is a straightforward way to close the gap. See protein for the full range.

Magnesium, baths and sprays

Magnesium is the most-bought product in this collection and comes in more formats here than anywhere else in the shop - capsules, powders, oils, sprays and bath flakes. The topical and bathing products are applied to the skin rather than swallowed, and the approved claims above relate to dietary intake rather than to bathing.

The unglamorous part

Sleep and total food intake do more for recovery than any supplement here, and no product compensates for training harder than you are recovering from. Persistent muscle pain, dark urine after exercise, or weakness that does not resolve needs a doctor rather than a bigger scoop.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Mag365 built their name on a magnesium powder that dissolves into a drink, which suits anyone who would rather not swallow another capsule after a session. Viridian is the clearest example of how we buy: no fillers, no binders, no artificial additives.

Lamberts supply the practitioner market and hold their specifications tightly - they have long been a sports-nutrition staple for that reason. Biocare formulate in the UK with practitioners, and Hunter and Gather do the grass-fed collagen and protein end.

This is where the money goes. Bisglycinate and citrate are absorbed more readily than the cheap oxide in supermarket own-brands and sit better with digestion - oxide is the one most likely to send you to the loo rather than to your muscles.

Malate and taurate turn up in formulas aimed at daytime use. If you are buying on price alone you will almost certainly end up with oxide, which is why a Viridian or Biocare capsule costs what it does.

Powders dissolve into water and are the easiest way to take a larger dose. Sprays go straight onto the skin over the area you want - a tingle on first use is common and usually settles.

Bath flakes are the pleasantest version: a decent handful, twenty minutes. Popular with anyone on their feet all day rather than in a gym, and there is no dose to measure.

FAQ

When should I take magnesium around training?

Most people take it daily rather than timing it to a session, and many prefer the evening. Consistency matters more than timing.

Is collagen or protein better after exercise?

They do different jobs - protein supplies the amino acids for muscle, collagen is aimed at connective tissue. Plenty of people use both. Neither is suitable for vegetarians unless it is specifically a plant protein.

Why does magnesium spray tingle?

It is a common reaction to the concentration on the skin, especially the first few times. Applying to damp skin or after a shower reduces it, and it usually settles with use.

Can I take too much magnesium?

Very high oral doses have a laxative effect, which is your signal to cut back. Stick to the pack and count what is already in a multivitamin.
