A cholesterol result is not one figure but several – total, LDL, HDL and often triglycerides – and the ratio between them matters as much as any single number. That is exactly why interpreting it is your GP's job and not ours.

If you have been given a result and told to make changes, the changes that count are dietary and lifestyle ones, plus whatever has been prescribed. Nothing on this shelf displaces that, and we would rather say so plainly.

Red yeast rice contains a naturally occurring compound called monacolin K. That compound is chemically identical to lovastatin, a prescription statin, which is why the permitted amount in a supplement is capped and why no claim is made for it here.

The practical consequence is simple: do not take it alongside a statin, and do not start it without speaking to your GP. It is also not appropriate in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Pharma Nord's StatiQinon is a different product again – ask a pharmacist about how it fits with anything you already take.

Plant sterols are the ingredient behind Quest's and Natures Aid's products, and they are well studied. Allicin Max's Lesterol is a stabilised garlic preparation. Oat beta-glucan is the other well-established one and has its own page.

None of these is a shortcut. Diet, weight, movement and smoking are where the real difference is made, and any product here works alongside your GP's advice rather than instead of it.

FAQ

Can I take red yeast rice instead of my statin?

No. Red yeast rice contains monacolin K, the same compound as the statin lovastatin, so you must not swap or double up without your GP's involvement.

What do the different cholesterol numbers mean?

A result usually covers total, LDL, HDL and triglycerides, and the ratios matter as much as any one figure. Your GP is the person to interpret it.

Are plant sterols worth taking?

They are a well studied ingredient and the packs explain the amounts. Whether they suit you alongside anything you already take is a question for your pharmacist.

Is red yeast rice safe in pregnancy?

No, it is not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Speak to your midwife about anything you are considering.
