What is in a ginger supplement?

Ginger supplements are made from the rhizome of Zingiber officinale - the same part used in cooking. Products differ in whether they use dried whole root powder or a concentrated extract, and extracts are usually standardised to a stated percentage of gingerols, the compounds most associated with the plant.

Root powder or extract?

Whole root powder is closest to the spice itself and is what most of our capsules contain. Extracts pack more plant material into a smaller capsule and state a standardisation figure on the label. Neither is better in the abstract - compare the stated extract ratio or the milligrams of root equivalent rather than the capsule size.

Fresh, dried or supplement?

Plenty of people simply cook with it or drink it as tea, and if that suits you there is no reason to buy capsules. Supplements are mostly bought for convenience and for a consistent, measured amount, which is harder to judge with fresh root.

Anything to be aware of?

Ginger can interact with blood-thinning medication, and high intakes are generally not recommended during pregnancy without advice. If you take prescribed medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your pharmacist or GP first. Follow the directions on the pack and do not exceed the stated dose.
