These fall into two old categories. Dandelion root and the clove and wormwood complex are bitter herbs, taken traditionally before food. Marshmallow root is a demulcent – it becomes slippery in water, which is the property it has always been used for.

None of these carries a permitted health claim, so we are describing what they are and how they have traditionally been used, rather than telling you what they will do.

The peppermint softgels are coated so they pass the stomach before releasing. That is the whole point of the format – uncoated peppermint oil releases too early, which is where the minty reflux people complain about comes from.

At 180 softgels it is a large pack and works out well per capsule. Take them whole and do not chew them, or the coating does nothing.

Worth flagging specifically: wormwood is a traditional bitter herb but it is not appropriate in pregnancy or breastfeeding, and it is not one to take continuously over long periods. Follow the pack rather than improvising.

If you have a diagnosed digestive condition, are taking prescribed medication, or your symptoms are new or persistent, speak to your GP before adding herbs on top. That is the right order.

FAQ

Why are peppermint capsules coated?

So they pass the stomach before releasing. Uncoated peppermint oil releases too early, which causes minty reflux. Swallow them whole.

Who should avoid wormwood?

Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding. It is also not intended for continuous long-term use – follow the pack.

What is a bitter herb?

A traditional category of herbs with a bitter taste, taken before food. Dandelion root is the familiar example.

When should I see a GP?

If symptoms are new, persistent or worrying, or if you have a diagnosed condition. Herbs come after that conversation, not before it.
