Can essential oils be applied directly to skin?
No — they are concentrated and should be diluted in a carrier oil first. A common guide is 1–2%, roughly 5–10 drops in 25ml of carrier. Patch test before wider use.
What is the difference between an essential oil and a carrier oil?
A carrier oil is pressed from a nut, seed or bean and is mild enough to use neat. An essential oil is a concentrated aromatic extract, used by the drop and always diluted.
Are they safe in pregnancy or around children?
Several essential oils are not recommended in pregnancy or for young children. Check the individual product page and speak to your midwife, GP or pharmacist before using them.
How long do the oils keep?
Citrus oils are the shortest-lived, at around a year. Most others keep two to three years in a closed bottle away from heat and light. Carrier oils can go rancid — if the smell changes, replace them.
