Aromatherapy Oils

Pure essential oils from Amour Natural and Aqua Oleum, mostly in 10ml bottles. Both are straightforward about what is in the bottle, which matters more than it sounds – a great deal of what is sold as essential oil is diluted or synthetic without saying so.

Lavender, peppermint, tea tree, eucalyptus and frankincense are the ones that move; the absolutes and the rarer oils are here too. See also essential oils.

Aqua Oleum have been distilling and blending since the 1980s and are one of the older names in British aromatherapy. Amour Natural cover the widest spread of single oils and are the ones most people buy day to day.

Where an oil is sold as a dilution rather than neat – rose and jasmine absolutes are usually 5% in a carrier, because neat they would be extraordinarily expensive – the bottle says so. That is honest labelling and worth having.

Essential oils are concentrated and are not meant to go on skin neat. The usual approach is a few drops into a carrier oil such as sweet almond, jojoba or grapeseed – broadly 2 to 3 drops per 5ml of carrier for an adult, less for anyone with sensitive skin.

Patch test a new oil on a small area first and leave it a day. Citrus oils in particular can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, so they are better used in the evening or in a diffuser rather than before going out.

Most people use these for scent, which needs nothing more than a few drops in a diffuser or an oil burner. It is the cheapest way to use them and avoids the skin question entirely.

Keep them in the dark glass they came in, with the lid on, somewhere cool. Citrus oils turn first and are best used within a year of opening; the resins and woods such as frankincense, patchouli and sandalwood last considerably longer.

FAQ

Can I put essential oil straight onto my skin?

No – they should be diluted in a carrier oil first. Neat oil on skin can cause irritation or sensitisation, and lavender and tea tree are no exception despite what you may have read.

Are they safe to swallow?

These are not sold for internal use and should not be swallowed. If you have read otherwise, that advice is best ignored unless it comes from a qualified practitioner who knows your circumstances.

Can I use them during pregnancy?

Several oils are not recommended in pregnancy. Check with your midwife or GP before using any of them, and keep to a diffuser rather than the skin if in doubt.

Why is rose so much more expensive than lavender?

Yield. It takes an enormous quantity of petals to produce a small amount of rose oil, which is why it is usually sold as a 5% dilution. Lavender is comparatively easy to distil.
