Brain & Cognitive Health

Omega-3 oils, ginkgo, ashwagandha, rhodiola, L-theanine and mushroom extracts such as lion's mane, in capsules, liquid oils, tablets and gummies. Brands include Lamberts, Viridian, Solgar, Natures Aid, New Leaf and Wiley's Finest.

Which nutrients have approved claims?

Iodine, iron and zinc each contribute to normal cognitive function. Pantothenic acid contributes to normal mental performance. Several B vitamins, along with magnesium and vitamin C, contribute to normal psychological function and to the normal functioning of the nervous system.

What about omega-3?

DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function. The approved claim applies to a daily intake of 250mg of DHA, so check the DHA figure on the label rather than the total fish oil weight - these are often very different numbers. Vegan algae-derived omega-3 supplies DHA too, and we stock several.

Herbs, mushrooms and amino acids

Rhodiola, lion's mane, bacopa and ginkgo are all popular here, as is the amino acid L-theanine. None of these carries an authorised health claim in Great Britain, so you will not find us making one. Some herbal products hold a Traditional Herbal Registration based on long-standing use, and where that applies the details are printed on the pack.

When to see your GP

Changes in memory, concentration or mood that are new, persistent or worsening should be discussed with a doctor rather than managed with supplements. That is true at any age, and it matters more, not less, if the change has been gradual.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Lamberts supply the practitioner market and hold their specifications tightly, which is why they appear so often in this category. Viridian build without fillers, binders or artificial additives. Solgar have been going since 1947.

On the omega side, Wiley's Finest fish oils are traceable to the boat, and Biocare do a vegan omega-3 from algae for anyone who does not want fish oil at all.

The number that matters is the DHA and EPA content, not the size of the capsule or the total fish oil weight. A 1000mg capsule might contain 300mg of actual omega-3, and the better labels make that easy to find.

DHA is the one associated with brain function; the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 250mg. Algae-derived versions give vegans and vegetarians a route to the same thing.

Nothing on this page will make you cleverer, and we would be wary of anyone selling it that way. What these do is fill dietary gaps - and if your diet is already good, the effect may be nothing at all.

Sleep, exercise and what you eat do more for concentration than any capsule. If you are worried about memory or concentration changing, please see your GP rather than working through supplements.

FAQ

How much DHA should I look for?

250mg of DHA daily is the intake associated with maintaining normal brain function. Check the DHA figure specifically rather than the total oil weight on the front of the box.

Is there a vegan omega-3?

Yes - algae-derived oils supply DHA and EPA directly without fish. Biocare's vegan omega-3 is the one we stock most of.

Will fish oil repeat on me?

It can. Taking it with food and keeping it in the fridge both help, and enteric-coated capsules are made for exactly this problem.

Do I need a B-complex or a single B vitamin?

A complex covers the group together, which is usually more sensible than picking one. B12 is the common exception, particularly for vegans, where a separate higher dose is often taken.
