Dr Bronner is an American family company best known for its castile soaps — vegetable oil-based liquid soaps, certified organic and fair trade, sold in bottles covered in famously dense text.

The appeal is concentration. One bottle genuinely does replace several products, because the soap is diluted differently depending on the job. That makes it good value despite the shelf price, and it is why the range is so short: a handful of scents rather than a product for every task.

The liquid castile soaps come in a range of essential-oil scents — Citrus Orange, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Peppermint, Tea Tree and an unscented Baby Mild for sensitive skin.

Sizes run from small travel bottles up to large refills, which are the sensible buy if you have settled on a scent. There are bar soaps in the same scents for anyone who prefers a solid.

We have stocked natural bodycare since 1988 and keep the larger refill sizes as well as the small bottles, which is usually where the value is.

This is a concentrate, and using it neat is the most common mistake. As a rough guide: a few drops for hands, a small amount for body or hair, and heavily diluted in water for dishes, mopping and general cleaning.

Do not mix castile soap with vinegar or other acidic cleaners — the two react and curdle. Keep it out of eyes, and use the Baby Mild unscented version if you are washing very young children or have reactive skin.

FAQ

What is castile soap?

A soap made from vegetable oils rather than animal fats or synthetic detergents. Dr Bronner's is sold as a concentrate, so it is diluted for use.

How much should I use?

Far less than you would expect. A few drops washes hands; dishes and floors want it heavily diluted in water. The bottle gives dilution guidance for each use.

Can I use it as shampoo?

Many people do, though it behaves differently from conventional shampoo and hair can take a few washes to adjust. Those with very dry or colour-treated hair sometimes find it too stripping.

Which scent should I choose?

Peppermint and Citrus Orange are the most popular for general use, Lavender for evening, Tea Tree for oilier skin, and Baby Mild unscented if your skin is sensitive or you are washing children.

Can I mix it with vinegar for cleaning?

No. Castile soap reacts with acids like vinegar and curdles, leaving a white residue. Use them separately if you use both.
