Fibre

35 fibre products - psyllium, inulin, oat and mixed-fibre blends, in powders, sachets, capsules and gummies. Brands include Optibac, Bio&Me, Fibre Up, Greens Organic, Ortis and Doves Farm.

Fibre has real approved claims

Unusually for this part of the shop, several are authorised. Oat and barley beta-glucans contribute to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels, at 3g a day. Wheat bran fibre contributes to an acceleration of intestinal transit and to an increase in faecal bulk. Rye fibre contributes to normal bowel function. These apply at specific daily intakes stated in the claims, so check the serving size against them.

Soluble, insoluble and prebiotic

Soluble fibre - psyllium, oat beta-glucan, inulin - forms a gel in water. Insoluble fibre, such as wheat bran, largely passes through intact and adds bulk. Prebiotic fibres such as inulin and FOS act as a food source for gut bacteria. Most whole foods contain a mixture, and most supplements here concentrate one type.

Start low and drink water

The commonest mistake is going straight to a full dose. Fibre supplements can cause bloating and wind if introduced abruptly, so build up over a week or two. Take them with plenty of water - psyllium in particular absorbs a great deal of it, and should never be taken dry.

Food first

UK adults are advised to aim for 30g of fibre a day and most of us manage around 20g. A supplement closes a gap; it does not replace beans, oats, wholegrains, fruit and vegetables, which bring a good deal else with them.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

The honest position: wholegrains, pulses, fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds will do this job better and more cheaply than anything in a tub, and they bring everything else that comes with them. The mueslis and the wholemeal flours here are the practical starting point.

Supplements are useful when food alone is not getting you there, or when you want a specific type of fibre for a specific reason. They are an addition rather than a replacement.

Prebiotic fibre such as inulin is food for the bacteria already in your gut, which is a different job from taking live cultures. Optibac's Bifidobacteria & Fibre sachets combine the two, which is why they are the ones people ask for.

Greens Organic inulin is the plain version if you would rather add it to things yourself. Both are powders, which makes it easy to start small.

The one piece of advice worth giving: increase fibre slowly and drink more water while you do it. Going from very little to a great deal overnight is uncomfortable and is why people give up.

A quarter of the suggested amount for the first week, building up over a month, is far more likely to stick. If you have a diagnosed digestive condition, speak to your GP or dietitian before making a large change.

FAQ

What is the difference between fibre and a probiotic?

Prebiotic fibre feeds the bacteria already present. Live cultures add bacteria. They are different things and are often taken together.

How much fibre should I be eating?

UK guidance is around 30g a day for adults, and most people fall well short. Your GP or a dietitian can advise on what is right for you.

Can I just eat more wholegrains instead?

Yes, and for most people that is the better and cheaper answer. Supplements are for when food alone is not getting you there.

Why do I need to drink more water with it?

Fibre works by absorbing water. Increasing it without drinking more is what makes people uncomfortable and is the usual reason they stop.
