Gluten Free

Naturally gluten free grains and flakes from Infinity Foods Organic – brown rice, buckwheat, quinoa and millet, in 450g and 500g bags.

Important: these are naturally gluten free grains, which is not the same as certified gluten free. If you have coeliac disease, check the individual pack before buying – shared milling and handling means naturally gluten free is not a guarantee.

This is the distinction that matters and it is routinely blurred elsewhere. Buckwheat, quinoa, rice and millet contain no gluten as plants. Whether a particular bag has been milled, stored and packed away from wheat is a separate question entirely.

Certified gluten free means that has been verified and tested to a threshold. Naturally gluten free means only that the grain itself has none. For anyone avoiding gluten by preference the first is unnecessary; for a coeliac it is the whole point.

The flakes are the useful ones – buckwheat, quinoa, millet and brown rice all make a porridge and cook in minutes, which is a genuine relief if you have got tired of the same breakfast.

Buckwheat is not wheat despite the name; it is unrelated and contains no gluten. Quinoa is a seed rather than a grain. Both are worth trying on their own merits rather than only as substitutes.

Read the pack, every time, and do not rely on a collection name on a website – including ours. Suppliers change facilities and labelling changes with them.

Coeliac UK is the better source on which products are verified, and your dietitian or GP is the right person to advise on your diet. If you are unsure about a particular product we stock, ring us on 01323 928523 and we will read the current pack to you rather than guess.

FAQ

Can I eat these if I have coeliac disease?

They are naturally gluten free grains, but that is not the same as certified gluten free. Check the individual pack, since shared milling and handling is the risk rather than the grain itself.

Is buckwheat a type of wheat?

No. Despite the name it is unrelated to wheat and contains no gluten.

What is the difference between naturally and certified gluten free?

Naturally means the grain contains none. Certified means the finished product has been verified and tested to a threshold, accounting for handling and milling.

Can you tell me what a pack says?

Yes – ring 01323 928523 and we will read the current packaging rather than rely on what a website says.
