Hampstead Tea works with organic and biodynamic gardens, including a long relationship with a single Darjeeling estate. Biodynamic certification (Demeter) goes further than organic, covering how the whole farm is managed.

The teas are sold by garden and by blend rather than as generic own-label tea, which means you can taste the difference between one harvest and another.

Darjeeling and other black teas are the core, with Demeter-certified lines among them.

Alongside those sit green teas and herbal blends such as Joy Rosehip and Digest Well, supplied as tea bags.

We have sold speciality teas since 1988 and keep the biodynamic lines, which are not easy to find on a supermarket shelf.

Darjeeling wants water just off the boil and three to four minutes — longer and it goes astringent. Green tea needs cooler water, around 80°C, and about two minutes.

Herbal infusions are more forgiving and benefit from five minutes or more. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking prescribed medication, check the ingredients of herbal blends, as several botanicals are not recommended in those circumstances.

FAQ

What does biodynamic mean?

It is a certification (Demeter) covering how the whole farm is managed, going beyond organic standards. Certified lines say so on the pack.

Where is the tea from?

Organic and biodynamic gardens, including a long-standing relationship with a Darjeeling estate. The origin is given on each pack.

How should I brew Darjeeling?

Water just off the boil, three to four minutes. Longer makes it astringent.

Are the herbal blends caffeine free?

The herbal infusions are; the black and green teas are not. Each pack states which.

Are they suitable during pregnancy?

Check the ingredients of herbal blends, as some botanicals are not recommended. Speak to your midwife or GP if unsure.
