Herbs & Spices

Dried herbs, ground and whole spices, blends and seasonings - very largely Just Natural Herbs, who supply the bulk of this range, alongside Al'Fez for North African blends and A Vogel on the herbal side.

Most of it is organic and packed in sensible domestic sizes rather than the thimbles supermarkets sell. See cooking ingredients for the wider store cupboard and herbal supplements if you want them in capsule form.

Whole spices keep their aroma far longer than ground - a whole nutmeg or cumin seed is still fragrant long after the pre-ground jar has gone flat. If you use a spice often enough to notice, buy it whole and grind as you go.

Ground wins on convenience for the everyday ones. Buy those in smaller quantities and replace them more often rather than keeping a jar for three years.

Just Natural Herbs certify a large part of their range organic, and the certifier is on the pack. With dried herbs the difference shows in aroma more than appearance - a good dried oregano should smell strongly the moment you open it.

Price per gram here is generally well below supermarket jars, because you are not paying for a branded glass jar holding 12g.

Sealed, cool and dark. Heat and daylight are what strip the aroma out, so the shelf above the hob is the worst place in the kitchen despite being the most convenient.

Ground spices are generally best within six months to a year, whole ones two or three years. Nothing goes dangerous - it just gradually stops tasting of anything.

FAQ

Should I buy whole or ground spices?

Whole for anything you use often and care about - the aroma lasts far longer. Ground for convenience, bought in smaller amounts and replaced more frequently.

How long do dried herbs last?

Ground spices are best within six months to a year; whole spices two to three years; dried leafy herbs about a year. They lose aroma rather than becoming unsafe.

Are these organic?

A large part of the range is, with the certifier named on the pack, and you can filter to organic only using the filters above.

Why is the aroma stronger than supermarket herbs?

Usually turnover and packaging. These are packed in smaller runs and sold faster, so they spend less time sitting under shop lights losing their volatile oils.
