Immune Support

71 products built around vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, elderberry, echinacea, propolis and live cultures, in capsules, tablets, liquids, sachets and gummies. Brands include Natures Aid, Biocare, Higher Nature, Udo's Choice, Bee and You and Allicin Max.

Which nutrients contribute to normal immune function?

These are approved claims rather than marketing: vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folate, zinc, selenium, copper and iron all contribute to the normal function of the immune system. Vitamin C and zinc also contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.

Vitamin D over the winter

Between October and early March there is not enough UVB in UK sunlight for the skin to make vitamin D, and the NHS advises everyone considers a daily supplement over those months. Of everything in this collection it has the strongest evidence behind it and it is among the cheapest.

Elderberry, echinacea and propolis

All popular, none carrying an authorised health claim in Great Britain. Some echinacea products hold a Traditional Herbal Registration, granted on the basis of long-standing use rather than trials - where that applies, the pack says so. Propolis and bee products are worth avoiding if you have a bee sting allergy.

What supplements cannot do

Nothing here prepares you for a specific infection or replaces vaccination, and nothing here should delay seeing a doctor if you are unwell. Sleep, not smoking and a reasonable diet do more for immune function than anything on this page.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Allicin Max are the name in stabilised allicin - the compound that makes garlic what it is, and which ordinary garlic capsules mostly lose. Biocare formulate in the UK with practitioners.

Higher Nature and Natures Aid cover the everyday end, and Solgar have been going since 1947. Between them they do the job without stocking six versions of the same thing.

From October to March the sunlight in the UK is too weak for skin to make vitamin D, which is why official advice is to consider a daily 10 microgram supplement over those months.

It is fat-soluble, so take it with a meal containing some fat. Many products pair it with K2, which is worth knowing about at higher doses.

Zinc contributes to normal immune function and is a sensible winter addition. It also has an upper limit worth respecting - taking a lot long-term can interfere with copper.

Add up what is already in your multivitamin before adding a separate zinc on top. More is not better here.

FAQ

How much vitamin D should I take?

Official UK advice is to consider 10 micrograms daily through autumn and winter. Higher doses are available and best taken on advice rather than by guessing.

Does garlic really need to be stabilised?

Allicin is fragile and most garlic capsules lose it in processing. Stabilised allicin products are made specifically to retain it, which is what you are paying for.

Can I take vitamin C and zinc together?

Yes, and many formulas combine them. Just add up the totals if you also take a multivitamin - zinc in particular has an upper limit.

When should I start?

Most people begin as the clocks change. Vitamin D in particular is taken right through autumn and winter rather than started once you already feel run down.
