Immunity

Vitamin C, zinc, vitamin D, garlic, echinacea, propolis and mushroom extracts, in tablets, capsules, sachets, powders, tinctures and gummies. Brands include Natures Aid, Viridian, HealthAid, Lamberts, Biocare and Quest.

Which nutrients contribute to normal immune function?

Quite a few, and these are authorised claims rather than marketing: vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folate, zinc, selenium, copper and iron all contribute to the normal function of the immune system. Vitamin C and zinc also contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.

Vitamin D in winter

Between October and early March, sunlight in the UK is not strong enough for the skin to make vitamin D, and the NHS advises that everyone considers a daily supplement over those months. It is the single most evidence-backed item in this collection and among the least expensive.

What about elderberry, echinacea and garlic?

All three are long-standing sellers and none carries an authorised health claim in Great Britain. Some echinacea products hold a Traditional Herbal Registration, which is granted on the basis of traditional use rather than clinical evidence - the details are on the pack. We stock them because customers ask for them, and we would rather be straight about where the evidence stands.

Liposomal vitamin C

Altrient and the Zooki range use a liposomal delivery format, where the vitamin is encapsulated in a phospholipid. They sit at a higher price point than standard vitamin C and are among the products customers most often ask us to explain. The authorised claims are the same as for any vitamin C product.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Lamberts supply the practitioner market and hold their specifications tightly, which is why they turn up in this category so often. Biocare formulates in the UK working with practitioners and builds to be hypoallergenic.

HealthAid and Natures Aid cover the more everyday end, and Solgar has been going since 1947. Between them they do the job without us needing to stock six versions of the same thing.

From October to March the sunlight in the UK is too weak for skin to make vitamin D, which is why official advice is to consider a daily 10 microgram supplement over those months. It is the one supplement that applies to almost everyone here.

It is fat-soluble, so take it with a meal containing some fat. Many products pair it with vitamin K2, which is worth knowing about if you are taking higher doses.

Vitamin C comes as plain ascorbic acid, buffered versions that are gentler on the stomach, and liposomal forms such as Altrient. Timed-release products spread the dose through the day.

Zinc is one to be measured about - it has an upper limit worth respecting, and taking a lot of it long-term can interfere with copper. Stick to the pack and count what is already in your multivitamin.

FAQ

How much vitamin D should I take?

Official UK advice is to consider 10 micrograms daily through autumn and winter. Higher doses are available and are best taken on advice rather than by guessing.

Is buffered vitamin C easier on the stomach?

Many people find it is. Buffered forms pair the vitamin with a mineral to reduce acidity, which suits anyone who finds plain ascorbic acid uncomfortable.

Can I take vitamin C and zinc together?

Yes, and plenty of formulas combine them. Just add up the totals if you are also taking a multivitamin, since zinc in particular has an upper limit.

When should I start taking these?

Most people begin as the clocks change and the days shorten. Vitamin D in particular is taken through the whole of autumn and winter rather than started once you feel you need it.
