Juices

Pure and concentrated juices – Biona's organic cherry, cranberry and elderberry, Optima's concentrates, Biotta and Active Edge.

Pure juice rather than juice drink, which is the distinction that decides most of what is worth buying here.

Pure juice is the fruit and nothing else. A concentrate has had water removed and is diluted before drinking, which makes it far better value by volume. A juice drink is mostly water with a little juice and some sugar, and is a different product entirely.

Biona's are pure and organic. Optima's cherry and pomegranate are concentrates, so a 500ml bottle goes a great deal further than the size suggests.

These are the three people come in specifically for. Tart cherry is sharp and is usually diluted. Pure cranberry is genuinely sour – nothing like the sweetened cranberry drink most people have had – and elderberry is the winter one.

They are foods and we will describe them as such. We are not going to attach claims to them, whatever you may have read elsewhere.

Fruit juice contains the fruit's sugar without the fibre that came with it, which is why a glass is not the same as eating the fruit. That applies to organic pure juice exactly as much as to any other.

Concentrates are meant to be diluted and are strong enough that drinking them neat is unpleasant as well as unnecessary. Follow the bottle. Once opened, these belong in the fridge.

FAQ

What is the difference between juice and juice drink?

Pure juice is the fruit alone. A juice drink is largely water with some juice and usually added sugar.

How do I use a juice concentrate?

Dilute it as the bottle says. It goes considerably further than the size suggests and is not meant to be drunk neat.

Is pure cranberry juice sweet?

No, it is genuinely sour and quite unlike the sweetened cranberry drinks sold elsewhere.

Is fruit juice as good as eating fruit?

Not quite – juice has the sugar without the fibre. It counts differently from whole fruit however it is made.
