The number that matters is net carbohydrate, and the second is what has been used to replace the sugar. Erythritol and stevia are the usual choices because they have little effect on blood glucose.

Watch for maltitol on ingredient lists - it is a sugar alcohol that behaves rather more like sugar than the marketing suggests, and it is the usual culprit when a 'keto' bar leaves people feeling rough.

MCTs are medium-chain fats, usually from coconut, taken for the way the body handles them differently from longer-chain fats. Oil goes into coffee or dressings; powder mixes more easily into drinks.

Start with a small amount. Going in at a full spoonful on day one is a well-known way to spend the morning regretting it.

Keto is a significant dietary change, not a supplement. These products make it easier to stick to - they are not the thing that makes it work.

If you are diabetic, pregnant, or managing a diagnosed condition, take dietary advice from your GP or a dietitian before making a change this large. That is not us being cautious for the sake of it - carbohydrate restriction interacts with several medications.

FAQ

What counts as net carbs?

Total carbohydrate minus fibre and, usually, sugar alcohols. UK labels list carbohydrate already excluding fibre, which differs from US labelling - worth knowing when comparing products.

Is maltitol keto friendly?

Less so than erythritol or stevia. It affects blood glucose more than its label suggests and is a common cause of digestive upset. Check the ingredient list rather than the front of the pack.

What is MCT oil for?

Medium-chain triglycerides, usually coconut-derived, taken as a fat source that the body processes differently from longer-chain fats. Start with a small amount and build up.

Can I bake with these sweeteners?

Erythritol measures closest to sugar and is the usual starting point. Expect a paler bake and a slightly different texture, and expect to adjust a recipe once or twice.
