A facial oil works differently from a cream. There is no water in it, so it seals moisture in rather than adding any – which means it works best applied to skin that is already slightly damp, not to a dry face.

That single point is the difference between people who get on with facial oils and people who conclude they sit on the surface and do nothing.

Two or three drops for the whole face, warmed between the fingertips and pressed in rather than rubbed. It is far less than people expect, and using more is the usual reason skin feels greasy afterwards.

At that rate the 25ml lasts a long time, so it is a sensible size to start with before committing to the 50ml.

Last, over anything else. Oil is the heaviest thing you apply and nothing gets through it afterwards, so a serum or cream goes on first.

Patch test on a small area first, and give it a month before judging – skin turns over slowly. Anything a doctor is already treating is a question for them rather than for us.

FAQ

Is a facial oil the same as a moisturiser?

Not quite. An oil contains no water, so it seals moisture in rather than adding it. Apply it to slightly damp skin.

How much should I use?

Two or three drops for the whole face, pressed in rather than rubbed. More than that is why skin feels greasy.

Does it go on before or after a cream?

After. Oil is the heaviest step and nothing penetrates it afterwards.

Which size should I buy?

The 25ml lasts a long time at two or three drops a day, so it is the sensible starting point.
