What "natural" means, and does not

It is not a regulated term in cosmetics. What is regulated is certification - COSMOS Organic and COSMOS Natural, Soil Association, Vegan Society and Leaping Bunny all set defined standards and are audited. Where a product carries one of those marks it is on the pack. Where it does not, "natural" is the brand's own description.

Free-from formulations

Most of this range is formulated without SLS, parabens, silicones or synthetic fragrance, and much of it is vegan and cruelty-free certified. Fragrance-free options are available across several brands and are the ones to look at for reactive skin - "unscented" and "fragrance-free" are not always the same thing, as some unscented products use a masking fragrance.

Refills and packaging

Faith In Nature and Dr Bronner both supply large refill sizes, which cut cost per use and packaging substantially. Several brands here use recycled and recyclable plastic, and Weleda's tubes and jars are widely recyclable.

Sensitive skin

Patch test anything new on a small area and leave it 24 hours, particularly products containing essential oils - natural does not mean non-irritant, and plant extracts are among the more common contact allergens. If you have a diagnosed skin condition or persistent irritation, see a pharmacist or GP rather than working through products.
