Nippon Kodo traces its history back centuries in Japan and is one of the best-known incense makers in the world. Japanese incense differs from Indian: it is typically bamboo-free, which means less smoke and a cleaner scent.

Sticks are shorter and burn for around twenty to thirty minutes rather than the best part of an hour, which suits a room rather than a temple.

Traditional scents include sandalwood and aloeswood, the classics of Japanese incense.

The modern ranges cover floral and contemporary scents such as lavender and matcha, which tend to be lighter and less resinous.
