Organic Protein Powder

Organic protein powder is protein grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, certified at every stage from field to packet. It matters more in this category than most, because protein powders are concentrated — you are condensing a great deal of plant material into a single scoop, and whatever was on the crop comes with it.

What we stock

Our organic protein powders are plant-based, which is largely a function of what is certifiable: organic pea and hemp are widely available, organic whey much less so. The range covers:

• Organic pea protein — the highest-protein plant option and the most neutral in flavour, which makes it the easiest to hide in a smoothie. Just Natural and Greens Organic both do a straightforward unflavoured version.
• Organic hemp protein — lower in protein than pea but with a fuller, nuttier, slightly green flavour and useful fibre alongside it.
• Organic brown rice protein — mild and easily digested, and a common partner to pea because the two have complementary amino acid profiles.
• Organic cashew protein — the outlier, and much the nicest to drink on its own.

Protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass. Prices here start around £3.51 and run to about £12, which puts organic plant protein well below the cost of most branded whey blends per serving.

Pea, hemp or rice — which to choose

If you want the most protein per scoop with the least flavour, choose pea. If you want something that tastes of something and brings fibre with it, choose hemp. If you have a sensitive stomach, brown rice is usually the gentlest. Combining pea and rice gives you a more complete amino acid profile than either alone, which is why so many commercial blends use exactly that pairing.

All of these mix into water, milk or a plant alternative, though plant proteins are grittier than whey and do better in a blender than a shaker. A banana or a spoonful of nut butter covers the texture entirely.
