A flavonoid – one of the coloured plant compounds that occur widely in fruit, vegetables and tea. Onions are among the richest ordinary sources. Supplements provide it in considerably larger amounts than a plate of food would.

That is the honest description and we are stopping there. Quercetin is much discussed online and a great deal of what is said about it is not something a shop should repeat.

Most products here pair quercetin with vitamin C, and Viridian's adds B5. Vitamin C contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress and to normal immune system function, which are its own claims rather than quercetin's.

The combination products are generally the better buy simply because you are getting vitamin C alongside, and vitamin C is cheap and useful in its own right.

Quercetin is poorly water soluble, so take it with a meal. Strengths vary quite widely between brands – Lamberts' is 500mg per tablet – so compare per capsule rather than per pot.

If you take prescribed medication, ask a pharmacist before starting quercetin. It is not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding without advice.

FAQ

What is quercetin?

A flavonoid found in onions, apples and tea. Supplements provide considerably more than food would.

Why is it combined with vitamin C?

Most products pair the two. Vitamin C brings its own well-established contributions, which is a reasonable argument for the combination.

Should I take it with food?

Yes. Quercetin is poorly soluble in water and is better taken with a meal.

Can I take it with medication?

Ask a pharmacist first, and avoid it in pregnancy or breastfeeding without advice.
