St Dalfour makes fruit spreads in France using concentrated fruit juice as the sweetener instead of added cane sugar. The result is less sweet and more fruit-forward than a conventional jam.

They are labelled as fruit spreads rather than jams, which is a legal distinction: jam has a minimum sugar content these do not meet. That is the point of them.

The range covers the classics — strawberry, apricot, raspberry, black cherry and blueberry — plus blends such as four fruits.

Jars are the standard size, and because there is no added sugar acting as a preservative, they need refrigerating once opened.

We have sold no-added-sugar preserves since 1988 and keep a wide spread of flavours rather than only strawberry and apricot.

Because these are sweetened with fruit juice rather than sugar, they do not keep like conventional jam once opened. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period stated on the jar.

No added sugar does not mean sugar free — fruit contains natural sugars, and the nutrition panel gives the figures. They work well on toast, stirred through yoghurt, or as a glaze.

FAQ

Is there added sugar?

No cane sugar is added — they are sweetened with concentrated fruit juice. They still contain naturally occurring fruit sugars.

Why is it called a fruit spread and not jam?

Because jam has a legal minimum sugar content which these do not meet. The name reflects the recipe.

Do they need refrigerating?

Yes, after opening, since there is no added sugar acting as a preservative. Use within the period on the jar.

Are they suitable for diabetics?

They contain fruit sugars and carbohydrate. Check the nutrition panel and speak to your diabetes team about fitting them into your diet.

Are they suitable for vegans?

The fruit spreads generally are. Check the individual jar for its full ingredients.
