Stress & Mood Support

Ashwagandha, B vitamins, rhodiola, L-theanine and mushroom extracts such as reishi and lion's mane, in capsules, tablets, powders, gummies, sachets and teas. Brands include Viridian, Lamberts, Solgar, Love Mushrooms, New Leaf and Foodhak.

Which nutrients have approved claims?

Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function and to the normal functioning of the nervous system. Thiamine, niacin, biotin, vitamin B6, B12, folate and vitamin C all contribute to normal psychological function. Several of the same nutrients also contribute to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue, which often matters as much day to day.

What about ashwagandha, rhodiola and L-theanine?

These are among the most-requested products in the shop and none of them carries an authorised health claim in Great Britain. We stock them because customers ask for them, and we would rather tell you plainly where the evidence sits than imply something the regulator has not accepted. Some herbal products hold a Traditional Herbal Registration based on long-standing use; where that applies it is stated on the pack.

Magnesium and sleep

Magnesium is the single most-bought product in this collection. Its approved claims cover psychological function and the nervous system rather than sleep specifically. Powders, sprays and bath flakes are all popular formats here alongside capsules.

Please do talk to someone

If low mood, anxiety or stress is persistent, affecting your sleep, work or relationships, please speak to your GP. That is not a disclaimer - supplements in this collection support normal psychological function in people whose nutrient intake is short, and they are not treatment for a mental health condition. Help is available and it works.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Viridian is the biggest name here and the clearest illustration of how we buy: no fillers, no binders, no artificial additives, and a company that has given a share of its profits to children's charities since it started.

Lamberts supply the practitioner market and hold their specifications tightly. Biocare formulates in the UK alongside practitioners. Solgar has been going since 1947. These are not the cheapest products on the internet, and they are not meant to be.

B6, B12, folate, niacin and thiamine all contribute to normal psychological function, and magnesium contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system and to reducing tiredness. A B-complex covers the group together, which is usually more sensible than picking one.

Ashwagandha and rhodiola are grouped as adaptogens - a traditional category rather than a regulatory one - and are generally taken daily over a period of weeks rather than judged in a few days.

St John's Wort interacts with a long list of prescribed medicines, including contraceptives and antidepressants. If you take anything on prescription, have a word with your pharmacist before starting it - take the pack in and they can check it properly.

Ashwagandha is not recommended in pregnancy, and anyone with a thyroid condition should check first. And if low mood is persistent or getting worse, please talk to your GP. We are glad to talk the range through on 01323 928523, but we will say the same thing.

FAQ

Which B vitamins matter here?

B6, B12, folate, niacin, thiamine and biotin all contribute to normal psychological function. A B-complex covers them together, which is why it is usually chosen over a single B vitamin.

Can I take ashwagandha every day?

It is generally taken daily at the dose on the pack, over a period of weeks. It is not recommended in pregnancy, and anyone with a thyroid condition or on prescribed medication should check with a pharmacist first.

Will any of these make me drowsy?

B vitamins and magnesium are not sedatives. Some traditional preparations aimed at sleep, such as valerian, are meant for the evening - the pack will say, including any warning about driving.

Can I take these alongside antidepressants?

Not without checking. St John's Wort in particular has well-documented interactions with antidepressants and much else. Speak to your GP or pharmacist before starting anything.
