Teapigs was founded on a straightforward complaint: most tea bags are filled with the dust and fannings left over after the good leaf has been graded out. Its teas use whole leaf, whole flower and whole fruit instead, in a mesh temple big enough for the leaf to move.

You can see the difference through the bag, which is rather the point. The range spans everyday black tea, single-origin greens, and caffeine-free herbal and fruit infusions.

Everyday Brew is the standard black tea and comes in larger 50-bag boxes for regular drinking. The speciality teas — Mao Feng Green, chai, earl grey and similar — usually come as 15 temples.

The herbal and fruit side covers peppermint, chamomile, liquorice and berry blends, all naturally caffeine free. Matcha is sold separately as a powder.

We have sold speciality tea since 1988 and keep a wide spread of the range rather than only the everyday blend.

Black tea wants water just off the boil and two to three minutes. Green tea is the one people most often get wrong: use water around 80°C rather than boiling, and steep for two minutes, or it turns bitter.

Herbal and fruit infusions are more forgiving and benefit from a longer steep — five minutes or more. The temples are designed to be used once.

FAQ

What is a tea temple?

Teapigs' name for its mesh bag. It is roomier than a standard tea bag, which lets whole leaves unfurl properly rather than being packed flat.

Are the temples biodegradable?

Teapigs states its packaging position on the box and on its own site. As materials change between production runs, we would point you to the current pack rather than give a blanket answer.

Which teas are caffeine free?

The herbal and fruit infusions are naturally caffeine free. Black, green and matcha teas contain caffeine. Each box states which.

How many bags are in a box?

Speciality blends are usually 15 temples; Everyday Brew also comes in a 50-bag box for regular drinking.

What temperature should green tea be brewed at?

Around 80°C, not boiling, for about two minutes. Boiling water scorches green leaf and makes it bitter — let the kettle stand a minute after boiling.
