Women's Health

Women's multinutrients, evening primrose and starflower oils, folate, and menopause and cycle formulas, in capsules, tablets and liquid oils. Brands include Viridian, Natures Aid, HealthAid, Lamberts, Vitabiotics and Natural Health Practice.

Which nutrients have approved claims?

Vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity. Iron contributes to normal oxygen transport and to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Folate contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy. Calcium and vitamin D contribute to the maintenance of normal bones, and magnesium contributes to normal psychological function and normal muscle function.

Iron and periods

Heavy periods are a common cause of low iron, and it is the single most likely deficiency in this collection. It is also one to confirm with a blood test rather than guess at, since too much iron is harmful. See the iron range once you know.

Life stages

The formulas here divide roughly by stage - general women's multinutrients, pregnancy and preconception, cycle support, and perimenopause and menopause. Bone support matters more after the menopause, when the protective effect of oestrogen on bone density falls away.

Talk to your GP

Several things in this collection sit alongside medical care rather than replacing it - contraception, HRT, thyroid medication and treatment for heavy or painful periods among them. Some herbs sold elsewhere in this shop interact with those. If you are on any of them, check before starting something new.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Biocare formulate in the UK working with practitioners and build to be hypoallergenic - their Female and Menopause Multinutrients are the two we are asked for by name. Viridian build without fillers, binders or artificial additives.

Lamberts supply the practitioner market and hold their specifications tightly. Natures Aid and HealthAid cover the more everyday end, and Optibac handle the probiotic side.

Iron is the common one, particularly for anyone with heavy periods - it contributes to normal formation of red blood cells and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. It is best taken away from tea, coffee and dairy, which interfere with absorption.

Folate matters before and during early pregnancy; calcium and vitamin D come up more with age. A women's multinutrient covers the group at sensible levels, which is usually more sensible than stacking singles.

If you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, take advice before starting anything - some nutrients have limits that matter more at that point, vitamin A among them.

Persistent tiredness is worth a blood test rather than a guess at iron: too much iron is its own problem. Your GP can settle it quickly. We are glad to talk the range through on 01323 928523, and we will say when it is a question for them.

FAQ

Should I take iron?

Only if you have reason to think you are short. Ask your GP for a blood test rather than guessing - excess iron causes its own problems, and the test is straightforward.

What is the difference between folate and folic acid?

Folic acid is the synthetic form; folate is the form found in food, and supplements often use methylfolate. Both are used - the pack states which.

Can I take a women's multivitamin while pregnant?

Not necessarily - pregnancy formulas differ, particularly on vitamin A, which is limited in pregnancy. Use a product formulated for it and check with your midwife or GP.

When is the best time to take iron?

Away from tea, coffee and dairy, which reduce absorption. Vitamin C helps, so with orange juice is a common suggestion. Some find it easier on the stomach with food.
