This covers pregnancy and the period afterwards, and the formula reflects that rather than being a general multivitamin relabelled.

It supplies 50mg of vitamin C, 28 micrograms of selenium, 24mg of potassium, 21mg of calcium, 13mg of magnesium, 10mg of iron, 6.5mg of nicotinamide, 5mg of zinc, 3mg of pantothenic acid, 1.3mg of vitamin B6, 1mg of manganese and vitamin B2, among others. Iron contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal cognitive function, and vitamin C increases iron absorption.

Iron at 10mg is the notable inclusion, since requirements rise in pregnancy and it is the nutrient most commonly short.

Balanced's directions are one to two capsules daily with a meal.

It is vegan and free from added sugar, and at one to two capsules a day the bottle lasts one to two months.

A supplement is not a replacement for the specific advice given in pregnancy, including on folic acid and vitamin D.

Speak to your midwife or doctor before taking any supplement in pregnancy, particularly regarding vitamin A.
