Bromelain is a group of protein-digesting enzymes that occur naturally in pineapple stem. Solgar's is a single-ingredient tablet, for people who want bromelain on its own rather than blended into a joint or digestive formula.

Each tablet supplies 300mg of bromelain from fresh pineapple, standardised to 1000 GDU. GDU stands for gelatin digesting units, and it measures the enzyme's activity rather than its weight. It is the figure worth comparing across brands: two products listing the same milligrams can differ considerably in activity.

Solgar's directions are one to three tablets a day, taken at mealtimes, or otherwise on an empty stomach at least half an hour before food.

We list five bromelain supplements. This is the only one supplied as a tablet rather than a capsule, and the 60-tablet pack lasts from three weeks to two months depending on the dose you settle on, where the Viridian and HealthAid packs hold 30 capsules each. Viridian's is the one to choose if you need certified vegan.

Bulking agents are microcrystalline cellulose and citric acid, with silicon dioxide and vegetable-source magnesium stearate to stop the powder caking. Not suitable if you are allergic to pineapple. A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied diet.

Bromelain (Bromelain, Bulking Agent: maltodextrin) 300 mg (1000 GDU* - from fresh pineapple). Bulking Agents: microcrystalline cellulose, citric acid. Cellulose Gum. Anti-caking Agents: silicon dioxide, vegetable magnesium stearate. Glazing Agents: hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, vegetable glycerin (from palm kernel oil and coconut oil) Emulsifier: lecithin (from soya).

Take one to three tablets a day. Take at mealtimes, or otherwise on an empty stomach, at least half an hour before food. Do not exceed the recommended intake.
