Research found resveratrol extracted from red wine protected mice from the ill effects of obesity and may extend their life span by approximately 15 percent, which is the equivalent of adding about 10 human years. Tests found that resveratrol increased the activity of enzymes known as sirtuins, which prolong the lifespan of every organism scientists have tested it on, including yeast, worms, fish and fruit flies.

Resveratrol has been shown to reduce carcinogenesis by activating apoptosis (programmed cell death) and inhibiting cellular proliferation and angiogenesis.
It has been shown to reduce oxidative damage, suppress platelet aggregation, modulate, reduce insulin resistance, enhance glucose tolerance and promote healthy oestrogen metabolism.
Polyphenols are a group of highly bioactive plant compounds, a large number of which have antibiotic and antioxidant activity within the plant. Resveratrol is a polyphenol compound predominantly found in grape skins, grape seeds, Japanese knotweed and peanuts and is produced in response to pathogenic attack, fungal bugs (common in grapes) and UV-irradiation.
Japanese Knotweed is claimed to be the highest known source of resveratrol containing 1,000 times the resveratrol content of grapes.
