Absolute Aromas has been supplying essential oils in the UK for decades and is a familiar name to aromatherapists and to people who simply like a diffuser going in the evening.

Oils are sold as single varieties rather than unnamed blends, with the botanical species and country of origin given — High Altitude Provence lavender and English Mitcham peppermint, for example. That level of detail matters, because the same plant grown in different places produces noticeably different oils.

Single essential oils make up the bulk of the range, from the familiar — lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, sweet orange, tea tree — to less common ones. A good number carry Soil Association organic certification.

Carrier oils such as sweet almond and jojoba are there for diluting essential oils before they go anywhere near skin. There are also ready-made natural room sprays, including Lavender and Breatheasy, if you would rather not mix your own.

Essential oils are concentrated and should not be applied undiluted to skin. For topical use they are diluted in a carrier oil; typical dilutions are low, and the supplier's guidance or a qualified aromatherapist should be followed.

Keep oils away from eyes, out of reach of children and away from direct sunlight. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition or are using oils with or around children or pets, seek qualified advice first — several common oils are not recommended in those circumstances.

Are Absolute Aromas oils pure?

Can I put essential oils straight onto my skin?

No. Essential oils are highly concentrated and should be diluted in a carrier oil such as sweet almond or jojoba before any skin contact. Follow the dilution guidance on the product or from a qualified aromatherapist.

Which oils are certified organic?

A good part of the range is, including the High Altitude Lavender, Sweet Orange, Eucalyptus Globulus and Peppermint. Organic lines say so in the product title and carry the certifier's logo on the label.

Are essential oils safe to use around pets?

Not all of them, and cats in particular are sensitive to several common oils. If you have pets in the house, take qualified advice before diffusing, and never apply oils to an animal.

How should I store essential oils?

In their dark glass bottles, tightly closed, somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight. Light and heat degrade them. Stored properly, most keep well for a couple of years, though citrus oils have a shorter life.
