Astaxanthin is a carotenoid – the family of red and orange plant pigments – produced by microalgae. It is what gives salmon and shrimp their colour, since they eat the algae or things that have.

Supplement astaxanthin is generally grown from Haematococcus pluvialis algae rather than extracted from seafood, which also makes most of it suitable for vegetarians. Check the individual product, since the softgel capsule itself may not be.

The strengths here are 5mg and 8mg, and that is most of the difference. Lamberts' 8mg is the strongest; Solgar's 5mg softgels the lower. Higher Nature combine theirs with blackcurrant.

Work out the cost per milligram across the pack sizes before deciding, because the pot price alone is misleading when one contains 30 and another 90.

Astaxanthin is fat soluble, so take it with a meal containing some fat. That is why softgels suspended in oil are the common format.

There is no permitted health claim for astaxanthin, so we will describe it and leave it there. If you take prescribed medication, ask a pharmacist, and it is not one to start in pregnancy or breastfeeding without advice.

FAQ

Where does astaxanthin come from?

Microalgae. It is the pigment that gives salmon and shrimp their colour, and supplement versions are generally grown from algae rather than extracted from seafood.

Is it suitable for vegetarians?

The astaxanthin usually is, but the softgel capsule may not be. Check the individual product page.

Should I take it with food?

Yes – it is fat soluble, so a meal containing some fat helps.

Is 8mg better than 5mg?

It is more. Work out the cost per milligram across pack sizes before deciding which is better value.
