Vitamin D for under-fives

Worth knowing if you do not already: the NHS advises a daily vitamin D supplement for all babies from birth to one year who are breastfed or having less than 500ml of formula a day, and for all children aged one to four. Vitamin D contributes to the normal growth and development of bone in children, and to the normal function of the immune system. Drops are the usual format for the youngest age group.

Before you start

Check the age range on every pack, do not exceed the stated dose, and keep supplements out of reach - children's gummies in particular look like sweets. Speak to your health visitor, pharmacist or GP if your child is under medical care, takes prescribed medication, or if you are unsure what is appropriate for their age.
