A plastic toothbrush is used for a few months and then exists more or less forever. Bamboo replaces the handle – which is the bulk of the object – with something that breaks down.

The bristles are a separate question. They are nylon on almost every bamboo brush including these, because nothing plant-based cleans teeth properly yet. Pull them out with pliers before composting the handle if you want to be thorough.

Bamboo is wood, so let it dry between uses rather than leaving it in a puddle in a closed pot. Standing it bristles-up in an open holder is all it needs, and it will last as long as any brush.

The handle may darken slightly over a few months. That is the bamboo and not a fault.

Singles for trying one, the set or family pack if you have already decided. Medium bristle throughout, which suits most people.

Replace it every three months, or sooner if the bristles splay – that applies to any toothbrush and is the thing people leave far too long. If your dentist has recommended a particular type of brush, follow that.

FAQ

Are the bristles biodegradable?

No, they are nylon, as on almost every bamboo brush. Remove them with pliers before composting the handle.

How do I stop the handle going mouldy?

Let it dry between uses, bristles-up in an open holder rather than in a closed pot.

How often should I replace it?

Every three months, or sooner if the bristles splay. That applies to any toothbrush.

Why has the handle darkened?

That is the bamboo ageing with use and water. It is not a fault.
