Ordinary vitamin C is ascorbic acid, and at higher amounts it upsets some people's stomachs. Buffered forms bind it to a mineral – usually calcium or magnesium – which makes it non-acidic and considerably gentler.

If plain vitamin C has ever given you trouble, this shelf is the answer rather than giving up on it. If it has never bothered you, ordinary ascorbic acid is cheaper and does the same job.

Solgar's Ester-C is a specific patented form. Viridian's Extra-C adds lipid metabolites. Bio Health's is a straightforward buffered vitamin C at 500mg with very little else in the capsule.

All three are non-acidic. The differences are in what else is in there and what you are prepared to pay, and the plain version is perfectly good if gentleness is all you are after.

Vitamin C is water soluble, so it is not stored and very large amounts are simply passed – usually the point at which the stomach objects, which buffering helps with. Splitting the amount across the day is more useful than one large dose.

Buffered forms contain minerals as part of the compound, so check against any calcium or magnesium you already take. Ask a pharmacist if you are on prescribed medication.

FAQ

What does buffered mean?

The vitamin C is bound to a mineral, usually calcium or magnesium, which makes it non-acidic and gentler on the stomach.

Is buffered vitamin C better absorbed?

The main difference is that it is gentler rather than stronger. If plain vitamin C suits you, it is cheaper and does the same job.

Should I split the dose?

Splitting it across the day is generally more useful than one large amount, since vitamin C is water soluble and not stored.

Does it count towards my calcium intake?

Buffered forms contain minerals as part of the compound, so check against anything else you take.
