Clipper's organic instants are the everyday option and considerably better than instant coffee has any right to be. Equal Exchange's Dark City Roast is whole bean, for anyone with a grinder.

Union hand-roast in small batches and have their own range on the site. Whole bean keeps its flavour far longer than ground, which is the argument for owning a grinder if you do not.

Clipper and Equal Exchange both built their businesses on trade terms rather than retrofitting them, and Equal Exchange are a co-operative. That is most of the reason they are on this shelf.

Organic certification on coffee covers how it was grown. It is a separate question from trade terms, and a product can carry one without the other – the packs say which.

A Vogel's Bambu is not decaffeinated coffee but a substitute made from chicory, figs and grains. It is a genuinely different drink and people either take to it or do not.

It is the answer if caffeine is the thing you are avoiding entirely, since even decaf contains a little. Store all of these airtight and cool, and use ground coffee within a few weeks of opening.

FAQ

Is instant coffee organic here?

Clipper's instants are organic, and the pack states it. Certification covers how it was grown.

What is Bambu?

A caffeine-free coffee substitute made from chicory, figs and grains rather than decaffeinated coffee. A different drink altogether.

Does decaf contain any caffeine?

A small amount, yes. If you are avoiding caffeine entirely, a substitute is the better answer.

How should I store coffee?

Airtight, cool and dark. Ground coffee is best used within a few weeks of opening; whole beans keep longer.
