Collagen has become one of the fastest-moving categories in the shop. Our range covers bovine, marine, multi-type and vegan formulas, in powders, capsules, liquids, sachets and gummies, from Planet Paleo, Zooki, KIKI Health, Hunter and Gather, Vital Proteins, Natures Aid and Freja.

What is collagen?

Collagen is a structural protein and the most abundant protein in the human body. It is found in skin, bone, cartilage, tendons and blood vessel walls. In supplement form it is usually hydrolysed, meaning the protein has been broken down into shorter chains called peptides, which is why you will see "collagen peptides" and "hydrolysed collagen" used to describe the same thing.

What types are there?

• Bovine collagen - sourced from cattle, and typically supplying types I and III.
• Marine collagen - sourced from fish, and typically type I. It is the usual choice for anyone avoiding beef, and a good part of our range.
• Multi-type formulas - blends supplying several collagen types in one product.
• Vegan formulas - these contain no collagen. They supply nutrients such as vitamin C along with amino acids, and are sometimes labelled collagen "builders".

Marine or bovine?

The practical differences are dietary rather than anything else. Marine collagen suits people who avoid beef but eat fish; bovine suits people who avoid fish. Neither is suitable for vegetarians or vegans, which is what the builder formulas are for. If you follow a halal or kosher diet, check the individual product, as sourcing and certification vary by brand.

Why do collagen products often contain vitamin C?

Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, bones, cartilage, blood vessels, gums and teeth. That is an authorised health claim for vitamin C, and it is why you will find it added to many collagen powders and included in the vegan builder formulas.

Powder, capsule or liquid?

Powders are the most common because collagen servings are large - often 5g to 10g - which would need a lot of capsules. Most unflavoured powders stir into coffee, smoothies or porridge. Liquids and sachets are the convenient option if you are measuring a scoop each morning and would rather not. Capsules suit smaller servings or blends where collagen is one ingredient among several.

How do I choose?

Compare the collagen content per serving rather than the tub size, as servings differ a lot between brands. Check the source if you have dietary restrictions, and check whether flavourings or sweeteners have been added if you plan to mix it into coffee. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking prescribed medication, speak to your GP or pharmacist before starting any new supplement.
