135 pure essential oils and blends from Absolute Aromas, Amour Natural and Aqua Oleum - single oils including lavender, tea tree, peppermint, eucalyptus, ylang ylang and frankincense, alongside carrier oils and blends.

Single oils, blends and carriers

Single oils are one plant, steam-distilled or expressed. Blends combine several. Carrier oils - sweet almond, jojoba, grapeseed, coconut - are pressed from nuts or seeds and are what you dilute essential oils into before any contact with skin. Carriers are not interchangeable with essential oils and are used in far larger quantities.

Always dilute before skin contact

Essential oils are highly concentrated and should not be applied neat. The usual guidance is 1-2% in a carrier oil for adults, which is roughly 6-12 drops per 30ml, and lower for children, older people and anyone with sensitive skin. Patch test on a small area first and leave it 24 hours.

Safety points worth knowing

  • Do not swallow them. These are not food products and are not sold for internal use.
  • Citrus oils are photosensitising - bergamot in particular. Avoid sun exposure on treated skin.
  • Pregnancy, epilepsy and high blood pressure - several oils are not recommended. Take advice before use.
  • Children and babies - much lower dilutions apply, and some oils including peppermint and eucalyptus are not suitable for young children.
  • Pets - a number of oils, tea tree among them, are toxic to cats and dogs. Diffuse with care.
  • Keep away from eyes, and store out of reach of children.

Storage

Essential oils degrade with light, heat and air. Keep them in their dark glass bottles, tightly closed, somewhere cool. Citrus oils have the shortest life, typically a year or two; woods and resins keep considerably longer.

Absolute Aromas have specialised in pure essential oils for decades and state the botanical name, origin and extraction method for each - that is what tells you it is the actual plant rather than a scented approximation.

Aqua Oleum have been at it since the 1980s and are among the most respected names in UK aromatherapy. Amour Natural cover a broad range at a gentler price. None of them sell 'fragrance oils' as essential oils, which is a distinction worth caring about.

Essential oils are concentrated and almost never go on skin neat. They need diluting in a carrier - sweet almond, jojoba, coconut - and the pack gives the ratio, commonly a few drops per 10ml.

Lavender and tea tree are the usual exceptions and even then, sparingly and on a small area. Patch test anything new on the inside of your forearm and leave it a day.

A few drops in a diffuser is plenty for most rooms. Citrus oils lift, lavender and chamomile settle, eucalyptus and peppermint clear the air - and they blend readily, so it is worth experimenting.

Keep them in dark glass away from heat. Citrus oils are the shortest-lived and are usually best within a year of opening; the resins and woods last far longer.

FAQ

Can I put essential oil straight on my skin?

Almost never. Nearly all need diluting in a carrier oil first - the pack gives the ratio. Lavender and tea tree are the usual exceptions, and even then use them sparingly.

Are they safe in pregnancy or around children?

Several are not recommended in pregnancy, and dosing differs for children. Check the individual pack and take advice from a qualified aromatherapist, midwife or GP.

Are essential oils safe around pets?

Several - tea tree and eucalyptus among them - are toxic to cats and dogs, and cats are particularly sensitive. Diffuse in a ventilated room they can leave, and keep bottles well out of reach.

How long do they keep?

Citrus oils are the shortest-lived, generally within a year of opening. Most others keep far longer in dark glass away from heat. If the smell has turned sharp, it is past its best.
