Which nutrients have approved claims?

Choline contributes to the maintenance of normal liver function, and to normal lipid metabolism and normal homocysteine metabolism. It is the one nutrient in this collection with a directly relevant authorised claim, and it appears in several of the combination formulas here.

Milk thistle, turmeric and artichoke

These are the three ingredients customers ask for most in this category. None carries an authorised health claim in Great Britain. Milk thistle products are usually standardised to silymarin content, which is the figure to compare between brands. Turmeric products vary enormously in curcumin content and in whether they include black pepper extract or another absorption aid - again, compare the standardised figure rather than the total weight.

A note on turmeric

Turmeric supplements can interact with blood-thinning medication and are not recommended for people with gallstones or bile duct obstruction. Check with your pharmacist or GP before starting if either applies to you, or if you take prescribed medication.

When to see your GP

Liver function is measured with a routine blood test. Persistent fatigue, abdominal pain, or any yellowing of the skin or eyes needs medical assessment rather than a supplement, and promptly.
