Muscle & Recovery

Magnesium in most of its useful forms, plus the sprays, flakes and bath soaks people use after training or on their feet all day. Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function and to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

BetterYou make up the largest part of this range with their sprays and flakes, alongside Viridian, Mag365 and Biocare on the oral side. See magnesium for the full range and muscle recovery for the sports end.

BetterYou built their business on transdermal magnesium - sprays, flakes and bath soaks - and they are the name most people mean when they ask for magnesium spray. Mag365 work with a powdered form that dissolves into a drink.

On the capsule side Viridian is the clearest example of how we buy: no fillers, no binders, no artificial additives. Biocare formulate in the UK with practitioners, and Solgar have been going since 1947.

This is where the money goes. Bisglycinate and citrate are absorbed more readily than the cheap oxide in supermarket own-brands and sit better with digestion - oxide is the one most likely to send you to the loo rather than to your muscles.

Malate and taurate turn up in formulas aimed at daytime use. If you are buying on price alone you will almost certainly end up with oxide, which is why a Viridian or Biocare capsule costs what it does.

Sprays go straight onto the skin over the area you want, and some people find them easier than swallowing another capsule. A tingle on first use is common and usually settles with repeated use.

Flakes go in the bath or a foot soak - a decent handful, twenty minutes. It is the pleasanter way to take it and popular with anyone who is on their feet all day.

FAQ

Which magnesium is best absorbed?

Bisglycinate and citrate, comfortably ahead of oxide. The form is on the pack, and it is worth checking before comparing prices - two products can look identical and behave quite differently.

Why does magnesium spray tingle?

It is a common reaction to the concentration on the skin, particularly the first few times. It usually settles as you keep using it. Applying to damp skin or after a shower reduces it.

When should I take it?

Whenever you will remember. Some people prefer the evening, and taking it with food suits most. Consistency matters more than timing.

Can I take too much magnesium?

Very high oral doses have a laxative effect, which is your signal to cut back. Stick to the pack, and count what is already in a multivitamin.
