Which claims are approved?

EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart, at a daily intake of 250mg. DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision, also at 250mg a day. ALA, the plant form found in flax and chia, contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels at 2g a day.

Read the EPA and DHA figures, not the oil weight

This is the single most useful thing to know in this category. A "1000mg fish oil" capsule might contain 300mg of combined EPA and DHA, or 700mg - the front label tells you the weight of oil, not the amount of omega-3 in it. Compare the EPA and DHA figures on the back, and work out the cost per day from there rather than per capsule.

Fish, krill or algae?

Fish oil is the most established and generally the best value per milligram of EPA and DHA. Krill oil supplies them in phospholipid form and typically at lower doses per capsule. Algae oil is the vegan source and supplies DHA, with some products also providing EPA - we stock several. Cod liver oil differs from plain fish oil in that it also contains vitamins A and D, which matters in pregnancy.

Worth knowing

Do not take cod liver oil in pregnancy without advice, because of its vitamin A content. If you take blood-thinning medication, check with your GP before starting a high-dose omega-3. Follow the directions on the pack.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
