Sleep

Products people buy with sleep in mind - magnesium (including glycinate and bisglycinate), valerian, L-theanine, lavender, chamomile, herbal blends and bath products, in capsules, tablets, teas, powders, gummies and creams. Brands include Viridian, Natures Aid, Rescue, Lamberts, Kalms and BetterYou.

Being straight about the claims

There is no authorised health claim for sleep on any food supplement sold in Great Britain. Melatonin does have one, but melatonin is a prescription-only medicine in the UK and is not sold as a supplement here. So nothing in this collection can be described as helping you sleep, and we are not going to imply otherwise.

What the nutrients here do have claims for

Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function and to the normal functioning of the nervous system, and it is the most-bought product in this collection by a wide margin. Several B vitamins contribute to the same. That is the honest extent of it.

Herbal products and Traditional Herbal Registrations

Valerian, passionflower and hops are the traditional herbs in this area. Some products containing them hold a Traditional Herbal Registration, which is granted on the basis of long-standing use rather than clinical trials, and which does allow a specific form of wording on the pack. A Vogel's Dormeasan is one example. Read the pack - the registration tells you what the product is registered for.

When to see your GP

Persistent insomnia is worth a conversation with a doctor. It is common, it has treatable causes, and cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia is more effective than anything sold here. If you are lying awake most nights, please do not work through a shelf of supplements first.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

No food supplement may claim to make you sleep, and we are not going to imply one does. What is here are nutrients with a role in normal nervous system function, and herbs with a long tradition of evening use.

The things that actually move the needle are a consistent bedtime, daylight in the morning, and less screen time late on. A supplement works alongside those, not instead of them.

Magnesium is the most common, and BetterYou's sprays and bath flakes are the format people prefer for the evening - a bath is a wind-down in itself, whatever the magnesium is doing.

Valerian, passionflower and lemon balm have long customary use before bed. Their packs carry the manufacturer's guidance, including any warning about driving.

Persistent insomnia is worth taking to your GP rather than working through this shelf. It is often treatable, and sometimes it points at something else worth knowing about.

Also worth mentioning: if you take prescribed medication, check before starting a herbal preparation. Several interact, and your pharmacist can settle it in a minute.

FAQ

Which magnesium is best in the evening?

Bisglycinate and citrate are the better absorbed forms and sit well with digestion. Flakes in a bath are the pleasanter option if you would rather not take another capsule.

Will valerian make me drowsy the next day?

It can for some people, particularly at higher doses. The pack carries any warning about driving or operating machinery - worth reading before the first time you take it.

Can I take these with prescribed medication?

Check first. Several herbal preparations interact with prescribed medicines. Take the pack to your pharmacist and they will check it against what you are on.

How long before I notice anything?

Nutrients like magnesium are taken as an ongoing daily supplement. Herbal preparations are generally given a couple of weeks of consistent use before forming a view.
