Minton & Donello cover most of it – milk and plain chocolate raisins, yoghurt raisins, banana chips and the coated nuts, in bags from 100g to 500g. Beech's are a British chocolatier of long standing and make the traditional creams and mints.

Lambertz and the German houses bring lebkuchen and the spiced biscuits, which appear properly around Christmas. Just Natural's carob-coated ginger is the one for anyone avoiding chocolate.

Carob is not chocolate and does not pretend to be – it is naturally sweet, caffeine free and a good deal milder. People either take to it immediately or not at all.

Plain chocolate coatings contain less sugar than milk. The yoghurt coating is sweeter than people expect, being a confectionery coating rather than actual yoghurt – worth knowing if you are buying it as the healthier option.

The larger bags are better value and, in our experience, get eaten faster. Buy the 100g if self-control is the objective.

Keep chocolate-coated things somewhere cool but not in the fridge, where they sweat and bloom. Banana chips and the uncoated dried fruit just want an airtight container.

FAQ

Is carob the same as chocolate?

No. Carob comes from a different plant, is naturally sweeter, contains no caffeine and tastes noticeably milder. It is worth trying rather than assuming.

Are the yoghurt raisins actually yoghurt?

The coating is a confectionery coating containing yoghurt powder, not fresh yoghurt, and it is sweeter than most people expect.

Do you have anything dairy free?

The plain chocolate items and the carob-coated ones are the place to look, but check the individual pack, as several are made on shared lines.

How should I store chocolate-coated fruit?

Cool, dark and airtight, but not the fridge – condensation makes the coating bloom and go grey. It is still fine to eat, it just looks wrong.
