Supplements

Our full supplement range - vitamins, minerals, omegas, live cultures, herbs and specialist formulas from around 200 brands including Biocare, Viridian, Solgar, Lamberts, Terranova, Quest, Natures Aid and Optibac.

Where to start

If you are not sure what you need, the most common starting points are a multivitamin, vitamin D over the autumn and winter, and omega-3. Those three cover the gaps most UK diets actually have. Beyond that it is worth having a reason for each thing you add.

Browse by nutrient or by goal

Single nutrients are grouped under minerals and the vitamin ranges - C, D, B complex, zinc, magnesium, iron. If you would rather start from what you are trying to support, try immunity, bones, joints, energy or gut health.

Reading a supplement label

Two figures matter more than the rest. The percentage NRV tells you how much of the reference intake a serving supplies - far more useful than the milligram number on the front. And the serving size tells you how many capsules or tablets that figure refers to, which is often two or three rather than one, and which changes the cost per day considerably.

A word on claims

Only a defined list of health claims is permitted on food supplements in Great Britain, and many popular ingredients - turmeric, live cultures, most herbs - have none at all. Where a nutrient does have an approved claim we say so on the category page in the approved wording. Where it does not, we say that too.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Viridian uses no fillers, binders or artificial additives, so the capsule holds little beyond the active ingredients. Biocare formulates in the UK with practitioners and builds hypoallergenic. Solgar has been going since 1947. Optibac names every probiotic strain and its count rather than one blended figure.

We would rather stock a few ranges we can explain than everything available.

Most people begin with a multivitamin and add single nutrients where the diet is consistently short. Vitamin D is the UK exception: between October and March there is not enough sunlight for the skin to make its own.

Compare the amount per capsule, not the capsule count. Some nutrients have an upper limit worth respecting.

Capsules, tablets, powders, liquids and sprays all appear here. Liquids and sprays suit anyone who struggles to swallow tablets, and are worth knowing about when buying for a child.

Form matters most with minerals. Magnesium bisglycinate and citrate are taken up more readily than the cheap oxide in own-brand multipacks, which is why the Viridian and Biocare versions cost more.

FAQ

Should I take supplements with food?

Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat-soluble and absorb better with a meal containing some fat. Iron is usually taken away from tea, coffee and dairy. Otherwise follow the pack.

Can I take several at once?

Usually, but add up the totals – the same vitamin often appears in both a multivitamin and a single supplement. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on prescribed medication or managing a diagnosed condition, check with a pharmacist or GP first.

What does no fillers or binders mean?

Most mass-market tablets contain bulking agents, flow agents and coatings that make them cheaper to press. Viridian leaves them out, which is a fair part of the price difference.

How long until I notice anything?

It depends on the nutrient and whether you were short of it. Iron is typically reviewed after about three months with a blood test. Supplements fill gaps in a diet rather than produce a quick effect.
