Products combining live cultures with the fibre that feeds them – Viridian's Synerbio range, Optibac's Bifidobacteria & Fibre, Lepicol, Biocare and PrePro.
Two jobs in one capsule or sachet. See also probiotics and fibre separately.
Live cultures add bacteria; prebiotic fibre feeds the bacteria already present. Combining them in one product is a convenience rather than a breakthrough, but it is a real one – fewer things to remember, and the fibre is the part most people skip.
Viridian call theirs Synerbio, Optibac pair bifidobacteria with fibre in a sachet, and Lepicol take the fibre-led approach with cultures alongside. Different balances of the same idea.
The useful thing on a label is which strains are named and at what count, rather than a single blended billion figure on the front. Optibac and Viridian both name theirs, which is why we tend to point people at them.
A larger number is not automatically better. Different strains have been studied for different things, and a well chosen smaller count is worth more than a vague large one.
Consistency matters more than timing. These are taken daily over weeks rather than as needed, and stopping after five days tells you nothing.
Introduce the fibre component gradually if you are not used to much of it, and drink enough water. If you have a diagnosed digestive condition or are on prescribed medication, check with your GP or pharmacist first.
FAQ
What is the difference between a probiotic and a prebiotic?
Live cultures add bacteria. Prebiotic fibre feeds the bacteria already there. These products do both.
Does a higher bacteria count mean a better product?
Not necessarily. Which strains are named, and at what count, tells you more than a large total on the front of the box.
How long should I take them for?
Weeks rather than days, taken consistently. A few days is not long enough to judge anything.
Do they need to be kept in the fridge?
Some do, many modern ones do not. The pack says, and it is worth checking.
