This is the thing worth knowing before buying copper. Copper and zinc compete for absorption, and a sustained high zinc intake is the commonest reason someone becomes short of copper – which is why zinc products often include a little copper alongside.

So check what you are already taking. If your zinc supplement or multivitamin already contains copper, adding this on top is unnecessary and possibly counterproductive.

2.5mg is a small amount by design. Copper is required in tiny quantities and most people get enough from food – nuts, seeds, shellfish and wholegrains are ordinary sources, and dark chocolate is a surprisingly good one.

Chelated means it is bound to an amino acid to aid absorption, which is Solgar's usual approach with minerals.

Copper is not a mineral to take on a hunch. Too much is harmful, and unlike the water soluble vitamins the excess is not simply passed. Take it because there is a reason – usually a long period on high-dose zinc, or advice you have been given.

If you have Wilson's disease or any condition affecting how your body handles copper, do not take this without your GP's involvement. Ask a pharmacist if you take prescribed medication.

FAQ

Why is copper sold alongside zinc?

They compete for absorption, and a sustained high zinc intake is the usual cause of low copper. Many zinc products include a little copper for that reason.

Do I need a copper supplement?

Most people get enough from food. It is one to take for a reason rather than speculatively.

What does chelated mean?

The mineral is bound to an amino acid to aid absorption. It is Solgar's usual approach with minerals.

Can I take too much copper?

Yes. Excess is not simply passed as it is with water soluble vitamins, so stick to the pack and do not stack products containing it.
