Folic Acid

26 folate products - folic acid and methylfolate, in tablets, capsules, liquids, a powder and a chewable, at strengths from 200 to 800 micrograms. Brands include Viridian, Solgar, Biocare, Lamberts, HealthAid and Terranova.

Pregnancy and trying to conceive

The NHS advises 400 micrograms of folic acid daily from before conception until the 12th week of pregnancy. Some women are advised to take considerably more - if you have diabetes, epilepsy, a high BMI, coeliac disease, or a family history of neural tube defects, speak to your GP, as a higher dose may be recommended. Folate contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy.

What else does folate do?

Folate contributes to normal blood formation, to normal amino acid synthesis, to normal homocysteine metabolism, to normal psychological function, to the normal function of the immune system, to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and it has a role in the process of cell division.

Folic acid or methylfolate?

Folic acid is the synthetic form used in fortification and in most research, including the trials underpinning the pregnancy advice. Methylfolate is the form the body uses directly and is increasingly popular. For pregnancy specifically, folic acid is what the NHS guidance refers to. Both are here.

Folate and B12

Worth knowing: high folate intake can mask a B12 deficiency by correcting the anaemia while leaving the neurological effects to progress. If you are over 60, vegan, or taking metformin or long-term acid suppressants, it is worth having B12 checked rather than taking high-dose folate on its own. See our B12 range.
