A standardised extract is processed so that each capsule contains a stated amount of the compound the herb is known for. Ground whole herb varies from batch to batch; a standardised extract does not, which is the entire argument for paying more for one.

Solgar's Curcumin Full Spectrum and Turmeric Root Extract are the clearest example. Cooking with turmeric is a different proposition altogether from either of them.

Ginger root and cranberry are the familiar ones. Rhodiola is the Scandinavian root with a long traditional history. Griffonia simplicifolia is a West African plant and the more unusual item here.

These are traditional botanicals and we are describing them rather than crediting them with effects. If you want to know whether one suits you, a herbalist or your GP is the right person to ask.

Herbs are not automatically gentle because they are plants, and several interact with prescribed medication in ways that matter. Griffonia and rhodiola in particular are worth asking a pharmacist about before starting.

Not appropriate in pregnancy or breastfeeding unless you have been told otherwise by someone who knows your circumstances. Start with one at a time so you can tell what is doing what.

Is turmeric in a capsule the same as cooking with it?

No. An extract is far more concentrated than the spice, which is the reason the capsules exist.

Can I take botanicals with prescribed medication?

Ask your pharmacist first. Several herbs interact with medication, and being a plant does not make something inert.

Are these suitable in pregnancy?

Generally not, unless you have been advised otherwise by your midwife or GP. Several botanicals are specifically not recommended.
