These pair vitamin C with something else rather than providing it alone. Biocare's uses rosehip, which is a traditional food source of vitamin C. Solgar pair theirs with cranberry, or with the B group.

Whether a complex is better value depends on whether you actually want the other ingredient. If you only want vitamin C, plain ascorbic acid is much cheaper and does the same job.

Biocare's is a 150g powder, which lets you vary the amount and mix it into a drink. That suits vitamin C well, since splitting the amount across the day is generally more useful than one large dose.

The tablets and Vcaps are simpler for consistency and for taking away from home. Compare the actual vitamin C content per serving rather than the pack size.

Vitamin C is water soluble and not stored, so it needs to come regularly rather than being built up. Very large amounts tend to upset the stomach, which is the usual limiting factor.

If you take prescribed medication, ask a pharmacist – vitamin C affects the absorption of a few things, and it is worth a quick check.

FAQ

Is a vitamin C complex better than plain vitamin C?

Only if you want the other ingredient. For vitamin C alone, plain ascorbic acid is cheaper and does the same job.

What is rosehip doing in it?

Rosehip is a traditional food source of vitamin C and is used as the base in Biocare's complex.

Should I split the dose?

Generally yes – vitamin C is water soluble and not stored, so spreading it across the day is more useful than one large amount.

Powder or tablets?

Powder lets you vary the amount; tablets are simpler and more consistent.
