Prenatal & Pregnancy

39 products formulated for pregnancy and trying to conceive - prenatal multivitamins, folic acid, vitamin D and live cultures, in capsules, tablets and a liquid. Brands include Viridian, Biocare, Natural Health Practice, HealthAid, Fruitful, WholyMe and Optibac.

Folic acid and vitamin D: the NHS advice

The NHS advises 400 micrograms of folic acid daily from before conception until the 12th week of pregnancy, and 10 micrograms of vitamin D daily throughout pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Folate contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy. Some women are advised to take a higher dose of folic acid - your midwife or GP will tell you if that applies to you.

Why prenatal formulas exclude vitamin A

High intakes of retinol - the animal form of vitamin A - can harm a developing baby, which is why prenatal multivitamins are formulated without it and why cod liver oil is not recommended in pregnancy. If you are using a general multivitamin rather than a prenatal one, check the label for retinol before continuing.

What else is in this collection?

Iron, which is commonly needed in pregnancy but should follow a blood test rather than being taken speculatively. Omega-3 from fish or algae, where DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function. And live culture products formulated for pregnancy, such as Optibac Pregnancy and Biocare Pregnancy BioFlora.

Talk to your midwife

Please use this collection as somewhere to buy what you have been advised to take, rather than somewhere to decide what to take. Your midwife or GP knows your history, and several ingredients sold elsewhere in this shop - including a number of herbs - are not suitable during pregnancy.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

A pregnancy multinutrient is a multivitamin built to a different specification from an ordinary one – formulated around what is appropriate during pregnancy rather than simply being a stronger version of the everyday product.

The prenatal omega-3 products, such as Minami and Wiley's Finest, are there because the usual advice on oily fish during pregnancy leaves some people short. Optibac and Biocare both make live culture products specified for pregnancy.

These are the two the NHS actually gives advice on, and that advice is where you should start rather than with us. Folate matters particularly before conception and in the early weeks; vitamin D is advised more broadly across the UK population.

Your midwife will tell you what is right for you and in what amount. See folic acid and vitamin D if you want to look at what is available.

The important one: high-dose vitamin A and retinol are not appropriate in pregnancy, and that includes cod liver oil, which people often take without thinking of it as a vitamin A product. Check the label of anything you are already taking.

Several herbs and essential oils are also best avoided. If you are already taking supplements, take the actual pack to your midwife appointment and let them look at it – that is a five minute conversation worth having.

FAQ

Should I take a supplement during pregnancy?

Ask your midwife or GP. They know your circumstances, your bloods and your history, and that is not a question we can sensibly answer from a shop.

Why can't I take my normal multivitamin?

Ordinary multivitamins are not formulated with pregnancy in mind and some contain vitamin A at levels that are not appropriate. Speak to your midwife before continuing with anything you were already taking.

Is cod liver oil suitable?

Cod liver oil is high in vitamin A, which is why it is generally not recommended during pregnancy. The prenatal omega-3 products are formulated differently. Check with your midwife.

Can I take these while breastfeeding?

Some are intended to be continued afterwards and some are not. The pack will say, and your midwife or health visitor can tell you what is sensible for you.
