Flaxseed oil provides ALA, the plant form of omega 3. The body converts some of it to the longer-chain forms found directly in fish oil, but that conversion is limited – so flaxseed is not simply a vegetarian equivalent of fish oil.

It is still a genuinely useful oil and the obvious choice if you do not eat fish. Just buy it understanding what it is rather than what a label implies.

The 200ml liquid is much better value per serving and goes onto food – salads, porridge, into a smoothie. It must not be heated, which destroys it.

Softgels avoid the taste and the fridge, and suit anyone who would not keep up with a bottle. They cost considerably more per gram of oil for that convenience.

Flaxseed oil is delicate and turns quickly. The liquid belongs in the fridge once opened and should be used within the weeks stated on the bottle.

If it smells sharp, bitter or like old paint, it has gone and should not be used. If you take anticoagulants, ask your GP before starting a concentrated oil.

FAQ

Is flaxseed oil as good as fish oil?

It is different. Flaxseed provides ALA, which the body converts to the longer-chain forms in fish oil only to a limited extent.

Can I cook with it?

No – heat destroys it. Use it on food after cooking.

Does it need refrigerating?

The liquid does, once opened, and should be used within the weeks stated.

How do I know if it has gone off?

It smells sharp, bitter or like old paint. If so, do not use it.
